Appliqué lamé; stripped book cover
Exhibited in ‘Let the beauty we love be what we do’ Chrissie Cotter Gallery, Camperdown March 2010
From the exhibition text;
Let the beauty we love be what we do features a collection of drawings and textile-based works reflecting on transformation and the beauty of imperfection.
The works are a meeting of innovative textile practices and non-traditional approaches to drawing. Through the manipulation of familiar materials and objects; from paper maps to stripped book covers; Barakat creates material and visual languages to uncover new perceptions and ways of being.
The works are based on a visual study of crochet and garments made by two Arab Australian women, objects that were produced without commercial patterns or instructions. The works embody an investigation of domestic craft practices and their ability to create new languages and ways of being.
She says;
My work pays homage to the ways one can create their own sense of self, space and community through artwork, craft and the handmade. This investigation has also led me to consider the significance of cultural production in affirming a sense of self and community for individuals and communities on the supposed margins of society.
